Car won't start: 7 causes and what to do — RoadHelp expert advice
Why is your car showing no signs of life?
The situation where, upon turning the key or pressing the Start button, instead of the familiar engine roar you hear only clicks or silence is a classic Almaty weekday occurrence. In our climate, especially in winter, the load on all vehicle systems increases significantly. Let's break down the seven most common reasons why a car won't start and what you can do right now.
1. Discharged battery
This is cause #1. Even if you left the interior dome light or the stereo on overnight, the charge might not be enough to crank the starter. In the sharply continental climate of Almaty, old batteries are the first to give up during the first frosts.
How to tell it's the battery:
- The starter cranks very slowly or emits a faint, barely audible hum.
- When attempting to start, the dashboard lights dim or go out completely.
- You hear frequent clicking from the relay in the engine bay.
What to do: If you have jumper cables, try to jump-start the car from another vehicle. But be careful: incorrect polarity can fry the electronics. If there is no one around to help, don't exhaust yourself; call the professionals.
2. Ignition system and spark plug issues
If the engine cranks briskly but doesn't catch, the problem might be the spark. Spark plugs can simply get "flooded" with fuel if you have tried to start the car several times unsuccessfully in freezing temperatures.
- Spark plugs: If carbon deposits have formed on them, the spark will be weak or absent entirely.
- Ignition coils: If even one fails, starting becomes a chore, and the engine will start to misfire.
3. Fuel system problems
It might seem obvious, but many people forget to keep an eye on fuel levels. The gauge on the dashboard might be inaccurate, or the fuel pump might simply not be delivering fuel from the tank.
What to pay attention to:
- Fuel pump: When turning the key to the "ON" position, listen closely. You should hear a faint hum from the back of the car (lasting 2-3 seconds). If there is silence, the pump isn't working.
- Fuel quality: In winter in Kazakhstan, it is important to refuel with high-quality fuel. Diesel paraffinization or ice in the fuel tank is a common issue faced by car owners in our region.
4. Battery terminal corrosion
Often the battery is still "alive," but there is no contact with the car. White or bluish buildup on the terminals creates immense resistance. The current simply cannot pass through the oxidation. It is usually enough to disconnect the terminals, clean them with sandpaper, reattach them, and tighten them firmly—and the car will come back to life.
5. Immobilizer and alarm system
Modern security systems can be finicky. Sometimes the alarm system "glitches," blocking fuel delivery or starter operation. If the key fob does not respond or the LED on the dashboard is flashing rapidly, there may have been a synchronization error. Try resetting the settings or locking/unlocking the car with the manual key.
6. Starter issues
If you hear one loud click when turning the key and then nothing, most likely the starter brushes are stuck or the solenoid relay has failed. This is a purely mechanical failure that is almost impossible to fix in the field without disassembling the unit.
7. Frozen components (common in Almaty)
Our winters can be surprising. If the car has been sitting in extreme cold for a week, the engine oil turns into a thick substance that the starter cannot crank. In such cases, a simple jump-start won't help—you need professional vehicle thawing using heat guns.
What to do if your car is stuck?
Do not try to "torture" the engine until the very last moment. Repeated starting attempts when there is a fault lead to starter wear, spark plug flooding, and deep battery discharge, which can lead to a complete battery replacement. Time is your most valuable resource, especially during morning rush hour in Almaty.
