Starter clicks but won't crank: why your car won't start

Power issues: dead battery

The most common problem we encounter during service calls in Almaty is a depleted battery. The characteristic clicking (or rapid ticking of the relay) indicates that there is enough power to engage the solenoid contacts, but not enough current to turn the heavy starter motor.

Before you panic, ask yourself: did you leave the headlights or dashcam on overnight? If your battery is already "tired," even a small parasitic battery drain can deplete it overnight. In Almaty winters, aging batteries are the first to give out. If you face this, we recommend checking out our guide on battery delivery and installation in Almaty, as reviving an old battery often isn't worth the effort.

Corroded terminals and poor contact

Even if the battery is fully charged, clicking can occur due to high resistance in the circuit. Inspect the terminals under the hood: white or bluish deposits are a sign of oxidation. Poor contact prevents the necessary cranking current from passing through.

  • Clean the terminals with a wire brush to remove deposits.
  • Ensure the nuts are tightened securely and the cables are not loose.
  • Check the "ground" strap – the cable connecting the battery to the chassis or engine. It often corrodes due to the road salts used in winter.

If the car still won't start after cleaning, the problem may lie deeper. Sometimes it is worth checking the condition of the entire system, as sudden malfunctions are often accompanied by dashboard warnings, which we covered in our article on what to do if the Check Engine light comes on.

Starter motor failure

If the battery is new and the contacts are perfect, but turning the key produces a single loud click, there is a high probability that the starter solenoid is "stuck" or burnt out. The internal power contacts may have fused.

How to tell if the starter is the issue:

  • A single click followed by silence.
  • Attempting to "jump-start" from another vehicle yields no result (the starter remains silent).
  • The dashboard lights dim when trying to start — this indicates a short circuit in the starter winding.

In such a situation, trying to "push-start" the car is a bad idea, especially for modern vehicles with an automatic transmission. It is better to use roadside assistance services to avoid worsening the damage.

Climate factor: when everything is frozen

In Almaty, we often encounter situations where engine oil thickens to a grease-like consistency in extreme cold. The starter physically lacks the power to turn the heavy crankshaft. In such cases, you might hear not just clicks, but sluggish attempts to crank. Do not "torture" the car until it starts — you could burn out the wiring or ruin your battery. We covered how to properly perform car thawing in Almaty in detail on our blog.

Remember that even portable jump starters can fail in extreme temperatures. If you're unsure whether a portable jump starter or a jump-start from another vehicle is safer, it is better to trust the professionals.

What to do right now?

If you find yourself in a situation where the car shows no signs of life, don't waste time trying to "revive" it with makeshift tools if you aren't confident in your skills. A common mistake is trying to start a car with faulty wiring, which can lead to a short circuit.
