How to Jump-Start a Car Correctly: A Step-by-Step Guide from the Pros

· RoadHelp

Why your car stopped starting

The situation is familiar to every driver in Almaty: on a frosty morning, you turn the key and hear only sluggish clicks or silence. If your car won't start, there could be several reasons: from leaving the headlights on to sulfation of the plates in an old battery. Given our climate, where temperatures can fluctuate by tens of degrees in winter, your battery's service life drops rapidly.

Before asking a neighbor for a jump-start, make sure the issue is power-related. If the starter cranks vigorously but the engine won't catch, the problem is likely fuel or spark plugs, and a jump-start won't help. However, if the starter barely turns, it is time to take action.

Preparation: What you need to know

For a jump-start, you will need high-quality jumper cables with sturdy clamps. Cheap, thin cables from supermarkets often fail to conduct the necessary current, and you will just waste your time. Look for cables with a thick copper core.

Safety rules:

  • The battery voltage must be the same (usually 12V). Do not try to start a diesel SUV using a small economy car.
  • The vehicles must not touch body-to-body, as this can cause a short circuit.
  • Turn off all power consumers: headlights, heater, radio, and seat heaters.

Step-by-step instructions: How to avoid frying your electronics

Many people fear damaging their car's computer (ECU). To avoid this, follow a strict sequence:

  1. Turn off the ignition in both vehicles.
  2. Connect the red cable to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.
  3. Attach the other end of the red cable to the positive (+) terminal of the donor battery (the vehicle providing power).
  4. Connect the black cable to the negative (-) terminal of the donor.
  5. Attach the other end of the black cable to an unpainted metal part of the engine block or bracket on your car. Important: Do not connect it to the negative terminal of the dead battery to avoid sparks near hydrogen gas, which could cause an explosion.

After connecting, start the donor vehicle and let it run for 5-10 minutes at slightly elevated RPMs. This will provide a small charge to your "dead" battery. Then, turn off the donor engine and try to start your car. If successful, do not disconnect the cables immediately. Let both cars run together for a couple of minutes, turn on your headlights (this will cushion the voltage spike when disconnecting), and then remove the cables in reverse order.

When jump-starting is a risk

Modern cars are packed with sensitive electronics. If you are not confident or if your vehicle is equipped with complex safety systems, it is better not to risk it. There have been cases where improper connection led to the failure of the alternator or expensive control units, which are dozens of times more expensive to repair than our 24/7 roadside assistance. If the battery is old, it needs to be replaced. We offer prompt sale and delivery of batteries in Almaty so you don't run into the same problem tomorrow.

Also, keep in mind that in cold weather, a battery might not just be discharged—it might be frozen. In such cases, charging won't help; you need professional vehicle thawing services. Read more about why this is important in our article on what to do if your car won't start.
