Before heading to the market or ordering delivery, pop the hood or check your service manual. There are three pillars on which the right choice rests:

Capacity (Ah)

Measured in ampere-hours, it indicates how much energy the battery can store. Important: installing a 90 Ah battery instead of the required 60 Ah is a bad idea. The alternator simply won't have enough time to charge it fully, leading to rapid battery degradation. Stick to the manufacturer's recommendations (an allowable deviation of ±5 Ah).

Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)

This is the most important parameter for Almaty. It indicates the current the battery will deliver when starting a cold engine. The higher this number, the easier the car will start in freezing weather. For our winters, it is better to choose a battery with a margin of cold cranking amps, especially if you have a diesel engine or an alarm system with remote start.

Polarity

This refers to the arrangement of the "+" and "-" terminals. If you buy a battery with the terminals "reversed," the length of the stock cables will simply not be enough for connection. Most Japanese cars have "reverse" polarity, while many European cars have "standard" (forward) polarity. Always check this before purchasing.

Battery types: what's best for the city?

There are currently three main options in Almaty stores:

• WET (serviceable and maintenance-free): classic lead-acid batteries. Optimal in price, time-tested.
• EFB: reinforced batteries for cars with a "start-stop" system. They last longer than regular ones and handle deep discharges better.
• AGM: the premium segment. They are vibration-resistant and have high cold cranking amps, but are sensitive to high voltage during charging.

Maintenance tips for Almaty

Even the top-tier battery will fail in a year if you don't take care of it. If your battery died in the cold, the problem might not be the battery itself, but a current leak in the onboard network or a faulty alternator.

• Check the terminals every six months. Oxidation is the main enemy of stable performance.
• Keep an eye on the alternator. If the charge is below 13.8V or above 14.5V, the battery won't last long.
• If you get stuck, don't try to "torture" the starter until the end — you will kill both the battery and the starter. Remember that you can only jump-start a car correctly by following a strict sequence, otherwise there is a risk of a short circuit.
