Ran out of gas on the road in Almaty: a step-by-step guide

· RoadHelp

First steps: if your car stalls while driving

The situation where the fuel gauge needle drops to zero while you are still several kilometers away from the nearest gas station happens even to experienced drivers. The most important thing at this moment is not to panic and maintain control of the vehicle. As soon as you feel the power loss and the engine starting to cut out, follow these steps:

  • Turn on your hazard lights. This is the first thing you must do to signal your presence to other road users.
  • Try to pull over to the shoulder. Use the vehicle's momentum to get off the roadway. If you are on a high-speed highway or a busy avenue in Almaty, be extremely careful.
  • Place a warning triangle. In the city, it should be placed at least 15–20 meters behind your car, and on the highway — at least 40 meters.

If you have stalled in a dangerous area or a narrow spot where the car is creating an obstruction, do not attempt to push it alone. It is better to call for professional help, as trying to flag down a passing car can be risky. By the way, if you feel that you are not in a condition to drive safely, it might be worth using the sober driver service to avoid risking yourself and others.

What you should absolutely not do

Many drivers make mistakes that can lead to expensive repairs. First and foremost, do not try to start the engine "dry" when there is no fuel left. The fuel pump in most modern cars is cooled by the fuel itself. If you keep cranking the starter, the pump can overheat and burn out. As a result, you will add a fuel system malfunction to the problem of an empty tank. If the car does not start even after you have added gas, check out our guide on why the car won't start; the issue might not just be the tank.

Ways to solve the problem in Almaty

Once you are on the shoulder, there are three possible courses of action:

  • Walking to the nearest gas station. This option is viable if the station is within 500–800 meters. But remember, you need a fuel canister, and walking along the highway in the dark is hardly a pleasant experience.
  • Help from friends or other drivers. Asking someone to "spare some fuel" or give you a lift to a gas station is a classic, but not always a reliable option, especially at night or in bad weather.
  • Mobile roadside assistance. The fastest and most comfortable method. Specialists will come to you with a supply of high-quality fuel, help you refuel, and, if necessary, diagnose your fuel system.

It often happens that the battery dies due to attempts to start the car with an empty tank. If this has happened, you will need not only fuel but also qualified assistance to jump-start the engine. We wrote in detail about how to safely start the motor in our article "how to properly jump-start a car." If the battery is old, it might be time to replace it — check out the signs of a dying battery.
